"As the image morphs there is a double take as the syntagmatic structure created pushes the boundary of the space-time paradigm. Light moves from yin to yang. There is an emergence, a reckoning and a poetry of the personal projection of one's shadow and the perception of the time and process of disclosing."  - James Nilsen-Misra

Nilsen-Misra explores notions of the shadow, both in terms of a perceptual study of the ephemeral nature of light and the content associated with shadow as a personal projection. The work questions transparency in the private and public domains in South Africa today. In Disclosed Projection fragments of everyday South African white middle class privilege are staged in the studio and lit with a Caravaggesque treatment that reduces objects to flat black shadow. Viewing this work from the distance, there appears a vacant black voids, yet, peering onto their black surfaces, awareness deepens of the depth of shadow beneath and one visits this closeted darkness, as it lies unconscious.

Aerodrome Interviews NM

Aerodrome - The Reader

Interview with Nilsen-Misra about his reading favourites

Alexander Matthews: What is your favourite novel of all-time?

James Nilsen-Misra: Waiting for the Barbarians by JM Coetzee. Chuma Sopotela’s stage performance of the girl expounded to a full feature in my perturbed imagination as I paged in two gripping sittings. Sometimes a book takes over your life and you start living and breathing this new world so fully, people around you wonder if you’re OK.
